Empress Wu' Guardians

Wu Zetian, referred to as the Sacred and Divine Empress Regnant, founded the Zhou dynasty after mounting the heavenly throne in the 8th Century. She is remembered for placing Buddhism over Daoism as the religion of state and as patroness of the arts, she commissioned many sculptures for Buddhist temples and caves. My horses whinny the unheard neigh on the “spirit path” to her tomb.
At an Art & Culture weekend in the Byron hinterland I will be exhibiting my latest body of work. I have used cobalt and Chinese oxide screen-prints exploring the use of auspicious flowers tattooed over the hind end of the horse like the Appaloosa’s signature rump. Floral symbols are screened with oxides onto tissue paper then transfered onto the bisqued ceramic body. Engobes, gloss glazes and manganese crawl glazes are brushed or sprayed over the top then multiple low temperature firings layer the history onto the body of Wu's guardians.
